FD Island of Chillies and Tobacco
This morning, you will be picked up from your hotel and drive towards Tetebatu on the southern slopes of Rinjani National Park. Before you set off for your trek learn how fried coffee is roasted the traditional way in a wok over the fire. Enjoy a glass of freshly brewed coffee and make your way across the rice fields and plantations and fruit gardens. Depending on the season different crops are grown, such as chilies, tobacco, and fruits like Rambutan, Jackfruit or Durian and Guavas. Farmers are busy with seeding, ploughing or harvesting and a trek through the fields and forests gives and ideas of the everyday life in a rural community. Pass a monkey forest, where with a bit of luck you may see the primates jumping from tree to tree, before you arrive at the scenic Tibu Topat waterfall.
Continue by car to Tetebatu village, where you will have lunch at local restaurant.
In the afternoon continue to Loyok, where you will meet a basket-maker family, for an introduction into the techniques of making bamboo thread and weaving of baskets, bags and boxes. The family is a typical example for many of Lombok’s residents stemming from diverse backgrounds all over Indonesia. Try yourself, to produce some of the different patterns that are possible when weaving with the bamboo thread. Continue to a village where roof tiles are produced from clay and get familiar with the different steps of producing a tile, from bringing the clay into the right consistently until burning it in the impressive kilns that every homestead in the village has.
En route to your hotel stop by at some of the many roadside markets and taste some tropical fruit of the season.
Return to your hotel in the late afternoon.
